The Hum - 2009/10/08 04:49Can anyone help with the hum please? I get a low continuous hum from my Gdec30, even at zero volume. The noise is not affected by any settings and is present on line-out recordings. It's not awful but annoying during quiet passages. Any ideas would be welcome please! Thanks Owen

On my GDEC I had a hum which came from the transformer inside the case. I couldn't find a solution unfortunately.
I think I read that some users here have returned their GDEC while it's under warranty to have this repaired - I was out of warranty so couldn't.
If you still have warranty you should return for a repair. The amp shouldn't hum at all - I tested a GDEC30 this in a shop and stuck my ear right up to the case and couldn't hear a hum.
Sorry this isn't a more useful answer, maybe someone else will have a solution.

Re:The Hum - 2009/10/09 09:19Have you tried pluging your amp in to a different power source?
Say if you take it to a different location other than your house.
I have read about others having prolems with hum and noise and it seems that it is mostly electrical power related, including the incoming power and or transformers.
Just a thought.

Re:The Hum - 2009/10/19 19:30Turn on the Gdec with nothing plugged in. Turn the volume up enough to hear the hum.
If the hum is present, the sound is in the gdec, if not it is in your equipment.
Change the preset. If the hum went away Choose a really clean preset. Did the hum go away?
If there is no change, there is a problem in the amp. If the sound changed significantly, the problem is in the preset.
If the hum is in your equipment......

Re:The Hum - 2009/12/28 18:20With nothing plugged in and the vol all the way up there is no hum. When I plug in the guitar I get some hum. When I pick up the guitar the hum goes away. It could be the pick ups.DEC-30 G&L Guitar. Biab, PT. Finale 2008

Re:The Hum - 2009/12/31 15:29It sounds like the guitar is not correctly grounded.
Plug in the chord and no guitar. Then turn on the amp and turn the volume up. If there is hum with only the chord, the problem is in the chord. Being careful not to touch the plug, wiggle the chord and see if the hum changes. If is does, the problem is in the chord.
If the sound doesn't change, turn off the amp. Plug in the guitar. Without touching the guitar, turn on the amp. If the hum is worse, then the problem is in the guitar.
Because you said the sound goes away when you touch the guitar, I think it is a grounding problem in your guitar.
What kind of guitar do you have?

Re:The Hum - 2010/01/02 08:01Yes the amp compleatly quiets down when I pick up the guitar. My guitar is a G&L ASAT Classic. 1997. I tired what you said with just the cable plugged in. Yes there is some hum with just the cable. I tried a few and all have some hum. It must be my cables. They are old. Time to replace them.DEC-30 G&L Guitar. Biab, PT. Finale 2008

Re:The Hum - 2010/01/17 18:07Because your rig goes silent when you touch the strings, my guess is that your bridge isn't properly grounded. When you touch the strings, you complete the ground.
Most cables make some noise. Making a lot of noise when the cable moves is a sign the cable died. Making some noise may be a poor grade cable or a warn cable. High quality cables are almost silent. I don't use those for practice.
